“One curious transformation happened during my time in Lithuania: a paragraph “Potato dishes” was changed into “Vegetarian dishes” on the menus of different places”, says Dario Martinelli, Head of International Semiotics Institute at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). KTU professor, who has been practicing vegetarian life style for 20 years, says that today less and less people find it “weird”, and is hoping that soon the “macho-culture” nonsenses such as “Real men eat meat” will disappear for good from public language.

Dario Martinelli: Creative Industries Should Escape the Ordinary Market Rules

“Metrosexual clothes, post-it’s all over the place, take-away coffee mugs and those horribly uncomfortable pouf armchairs… Every epoch has its fashions, and its ways of being a bit pathetic”, Dario Martinelli Head of the KTU’s International Semiotics Institute ironically comments on the stereotypical “creative” work space. On the other hand, according to Martinelli, although creativity of often separated from other “non-creative” industries, when it is not, it makes “a hell of a difference”.

Homophobia and the Ambiguous Problem of Individual Freedom

The recent sensation around the homophobic Facebook post written by the Lithuanian DJ “Ten Walls” (Marijus Adomaitis) has generated – as usual in these cases – a number of polarized reactions, but most of all has re-opened once again the Pandora’s vase of the admittedly-difficult relation that Lithuania has with homosexuality, especially in times like this, when (finally, if I may add) issues of same-sex marriage are being addressed.
