Mapping of Risk Perception in Lithuania: Spatial and Socio-psychological Dimensions (RiskSpace)

Project no.: P-MIP-19-365

Project description:

The pursuit of security is an important challenge in modern society. The UN Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 seeks to strengthen disaster and risk management and the preparedness of communities and states. The response of communities to various threats depends on both their subjective perceptions and their awareness of local, regional and global risk factors. The methodology developed in the project integrates risk assessments from different domains into a single analytical model and emphasizes the spatial dimension of risks and risk perception.
The aim of the project – to compose spatial and socio-psychological maps of risk perceptions and risk assessment in Lithuania, based on subjective and objective assessments of complex risks and vulnerabilities.

Project funding:

Projects funded by the Research Council of Lithuania (RCL), Projects carried out by researchers’ teams

Project results:

The empirical studies carried out during the project include:
– Collection of risk indicators in 5 areas (ecological, economic, geopolitical, social and technological risks), analysis of spatial distribution and derivation of risk indices (database of 25 indicators).
– Representative survey of the Lithuanian population (2007 respondents). Conducted September-October 2020.
Online survey of Lithuanian municipal experts from emergency commissions (59 experts from 60 municipalities took part). Conducted March – April2021.
– The results of the research were used to create and compare maps of objective risk assessment and subjective risk perception.
The project has produced a peer-reviewed scientific monograph, 2 published articles in WoS journals, 2 more articles submitted to the editors, a publication of recommendations for experts, 13 conference presentations, a national scientific seminar, a research trip to the Risk and Crisis Centre in Sweden, and a number of science popularization articles.
