The congress is at the same time a continuation of the 25 year old tradition of the International Semiotics Institute, and, since 2014 (when the institute moved from Imatra, Finland, to Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania) the opening of a new phase in its history. It is traditionally organized in late Spring/early Summer.
ICoN aims to discuss the problems and opportunities currently faced by the humanities, also in their intersection with other fields of inquiry, and to establish a novel, interdisciplinary platform for scholars and students (hence “Numanities”: New Humanities). As such, it does not only include presentations and sessions, but also a number of open workshops and other creative forms of interaction among scholars.
The first edition of the congress, in June 2014, gathered 120 active participants from 21 world countries and 61 different academic institutions.
