The impact of play programmes on pre-school children’s motor skills

Project no.: 09.3.3-LMT-K-712-22-0337

Project description:

Intensive biological maturation of a child’s brain takes place in the preschool age, which determines the distribution of the child’s natural powers, physical, cognitive, emotional, social development and success in school and further life (Visagurskienė et al., 2016). Good motor skills affect children’s physical, social, and psychological development, but this connection is not well understood. Posture of preschool children is a topical societal problem of growing interest to researchers (Steel et al., 2003), as posture is formed in the preschool period and, taking into account the peculiarities of fine motor skills, optimal movement function can be ensured in a timely manner (Rodger et al., 2010) . According to many researchers, it is in this age group that a targeted physiotherapy program should be used as a preventive measure to prevent postural and fine motor disorders (Dobbins et al., 2009). Therefore, animated game programs could be one way to help solve posture problems. Today, no animated game programs have been created in Lithuanian, therefore we believe that well-thought-out and creative programs of game design elements will perfectly involve the player in the offered activities. The aim of the project is to determine the need for animated game programs and the motor skills of 5-7 year old children influencing risk factors.

Project funding:

Project is funded by EU Structural Funds according to the 2014–2020 Operational Programme for the European Union Funds’ Investments priority “Development of scientific competence of researchers, other researchers, students through practical scientific activities” under Measure No. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712.

Project results:

The student will conduct an analysis of anthropometric indicators, a social survey with questions for kindergarten teachers and
administration to find out the need for play programs in the educational process. According to the motor skills assessment indicators, correlations will be sought between the health status indicators (data of the analysis of anthropometric indicators) and the risk factors influencing the formation of (un) regular motor skills. According to the motor skills assessment indicators, correlations will be sought between the indicators of determining the need for play programs in the educational process and the risk factors influencing the formation of (un) regular motor skills.
