In the newly published Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 subject rankings, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is the leader among Lithuanian universities in the fields of business and economics, social sciences, and engineering.

KTU was ranked in six out of 11 subject areas.

For the first time this year, KTU has been ranked in the arts and humanities; the university is placed 501–600 and is the second best in Lithuania in this field.

KTU maintains its position in five fields. It is ranked 501–600 in business and economics; 601–800 in social sciences; 801–1,000 in engineering; 801–1,000 in computer science; and 1,001–1,250 in physical sciences.

According to the Research Quality criterion, KTU leads among Lithuanian universities in five of the ranked scientific fields this year. The Research Quality includes indicators such as Citation Impact, Research Strength, Research Excellence, and Research Influence.

“These are extremely important achievements for the university, as the quality of research has always been an integral part of our scientific activity. This allows us to increase our competitiveness and international recognition, develop our partner networks, and promote innovation and high added value for the state and society,” emphasises Kęstutis Baltakys, Vice-Rector for Science at KTU.

The THE subject ranking uses the same methodology as the general university rankings. It is based on 18 performance indicators covering teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and internationalisation. However, to assess performance more accurately by field of study/research, the weights of the indicators, as well as the limits on the number of publications and staff, are adjusted separately for each field.
