On November 21-22, 2024, the international scientific conference “Intermediality in Communication” took place at Kaunas University of Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (KTU, FSSAH). The conference, organised by the research group “Research of Translation and Languages”, became a special place to discuss interdisciplinary topics, such as research in communication, linguistics, artificial intelligence (AI), music and sound.
Scholars from 22 different countries attended this conference. Speakers came to Kaunas from such prestigious universities as the University of Cambridge (UK), the University of Twente (the Netherlands), the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), the Corvinus University of Budapest (Hungary), the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland), the University of Lyon (France), the Senshu University (Japan), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden). The participation of speakers from such prestigious universities made the conference international and ensured its high quality.
The main topic was intermediality—the connection between different means of communication. Various fields allowed to discuss the diverse nature of modern information delivery and its impact on societies. “The concept of intermediality allows to combine different means of communication and to promote innovative ideas in language and technology research,” said Saulė Petronienė, the head of KTU’s Centre of Foreign Languages.
Saulutė Juzelėnienė, one of the conference’s organisers and the Head of the KTU research group “Research of Translation and Languages”, stressed the importance of this event to the development of interdisciplinary research. “This conference proves the relevance of language and technologies in the academic and the global context. It is an excellent opportunity for scholars to exchange insights and develop new research networks.”
The conference covered diverse topics. Speakers discussed the implementation of AI in linguistics, challenges of audiovisual translation, intermediality in modern media, the interaction of art and technologies, innovations in language teaching, elements of cultural communication, the importance of international communication in a global world, analysis of new media roles, etc. Interdisciplinarity sparked live debates and led to the discovery of new points of view on modern communication.
